Does this remove spaces between words?

No. Only spaces at the very beginning and end of each cell are removed. "John Doe" stays as "John Doe" — only " John Doe " becomes "John Doe".

Why do hidden spaces matter?

Spaces you can't see cause real problems: "John" and "John " are treated as different values in lookups, VLOOKUPs fail, and you get false duplicates.

Will this fix my VLOOKUP errors?

Often, yes. Many VLOOKUP and matching errors are caused by invisible trailing spaces. Trimming whitespace is the first thing to try.
